Adhesives for modular furniture in living rooms
In the living area, it is impossible to imagine life without case furniture. This includes everyday pieces such as cabinets, chests of drawers, coffee tables or stereo cabinets which can be found in almost every living room. The panels used for this type of furniture are often made of wood-based materials, such as MDF or pressboard. To create a desirable appearance, the surfaces are laminated with decorative material. This would not be possible without suitable adhesives. Durability, perfectly laminated surfaces or an edge finish with an invisible glue line define the demanding requirements profile of the adhesive. The adhesive used plays a key role in ensuring an uncomplicated and efficient production process.
Polyurethane-based adhesives offer by far the best performance. KLEIBERIT micro-emission adhesives in particular are being used more and more. They enable even better occupational safety and are more environmentally friendly.
Adhesives for 2D surface lamination
Laminating furniture fronts
Wood-based materials such as particleboard or MDF are the typical basic elements of modular furniture. To improve the overall appearance and depending on the intended use, the surfaces are then coated with different decors, ranging from real wood veneers to ABS, PMMA or PET films. The choice is huge and offers furniture designers almost unlimited possibilities.
The following furniture elements can be surface laminated:
-
fronts
-
side panels
-
rear panels
-
shelves
Super matt and high-gloss decors are currently in trend. The surfaces must be mirror-smooth, also across bonded edges, as even the smallest irregularities can have a negative impact on the visual effect.
Our product range includes a choice of adhesives for classic surface laminating, high-gloss and super matt decors, and even for laminating with extremely thin films. We also offer our expertise to optimally configure your production processes.
Surface and edges in one step – the CompleteLine Method We offer tried-and-tested inline solutions for effective surface bonding and edge banding.
KLEIBERIT strives to constantly and ambitiously improve adhesive formulations. Our engineers have many years of experience in surface laminating, and comprehensive knowledge of standard machines and production processes. Find the right adhesive for your purpose and let us help you develop an efficient production process.
Surface lamination with 3D technology
Some furniture surfaces are three-dimensional (usually specially formed or milled MDF panels), either for construction or design-related reasons. They are surface laminated to achieve an appealing look, feel and function, usually in a 3D process using membrane or vacuum pressing. As a rule, low-viscosity, single or two-component PUR dispersions are used for laminating.
Examples for uses:
-
fronts
-
shelf tops of sideboards and display cabinets
-
closet doors
made of material combinations of:
-
PVC films and MDF
-
PP films and MDF
-
ABS films and MDF
-
real wood veneers and MDF
Narrow radii and sharp contours are a special challenge in 3D lamination. Achieving a good result requires both the right adhesive and the correct know-how for its application.
PUR dispersions are the products of choice here, as they can be used for gluing standard films as well as high-gloss decors. Even very thin films that are sensitive to high temperatures can be glued with the right dispersion. The PUR dispersion is applied to the carrier material either with a manual gun or automated spray nozzles, and the decor material is then pressed on with a vacuum or membrane press. The pressure and heat in the press reactivate the adhesive and allow the film to adapt to the contours of the carrier material.
PVAc dispersions (aka white glues) can be used for laminating real wood veneers, and are a cost-effective alternative to PUR dispersions for gluing all kinds of veneers. Before the materials are joined in a membrane press, the veneers are moistened to prevent any cracks or tears appearing during the pressing process. PUR dispersions are the best choice when a very high resistance to temperatures and moisture is required, e.g. as in for bathroom and kitchen furniture.

Edge banding for living room furniture
Invisible glue lines between surfaces and edges are fundamental to ensuring a good visual appearance. So-called zero bond lines represent top processing quality and are the benchmark for modern edge banding. Manufacturing can be complex, with specifications such as high processing speeds and immediate subsequent processing having to be factored in.
Naturally, any adhesives used also have to meet the demanding criteria. Over many years and in close cooperation with renowned machine manufacturers, we have developed groundbreaking edge banding solutions. Which adhesive is best for which purpose depends on specific requirements, such as the materials used, the technical production parameters, and the intended use of the end product. Edge banding is typically used on the following furniture parts:
-
sides
-
shelf tops and undersides
-
shelves
-
fronts
Common material combinations used for edge banding are:
-
MDF boards with ABS edges
-
chipboards with ABS edges
-
sandwich panels with ABS edges
-
sandwich panels with aluminium edges
EVA, APAO or PUR hotmelts are used depending on the intended purpose.
Do you need help on which adhesive to use or how to optimize processes? Our engineers have extensive knowledge of standard edge banding machines. With over 70 years of experience in adhesives and coating machines and methods, we have the expertise to improve your specific edge banding processes.
Profile wrapping for living room cabinet furniture
Laminated decor skirting is integral to modular furniture. Sophisticated designs with rounded elements, etc., provide visual appeal as well as having functional purposes, and there are countless decor materials to choose from on the market. Coating surfaces with narrow radii requires very specific adhesive properties and processing conditions. Using the right adhesive leads to perfect results and significantly contributes to an efficient and cost-effective production process.
Reactive PUR hotmelts are the product of choice for profile wrapping. Using the right primer (if and where needed) and an optimally configured wrapping line will guarantee consistent adhesive quality. The following material combinations are common for living room furniture:
Decor materials:
-
CPL
-
paper
-
veneers
-
thermoplastic films
Profile materials:
-
solid wood
-
wood-based materials
-
aluminium
-
plastics

Gluing dowels and furniture bodies
A finished piece of modular furniture has all its components joined together, generally with dowels. To achieve a high degree of stability, special dowel glues are used to attach the dowels, often mechanically with automatic dowel insertion machines. Either a very high viscosity or a low viscosity thixotropic dowel glue is used, depending on the specifications of the production process. Our modern dowel glues are easy to dose and provide secure adhesion over the entire lifecycle of the piece of furniture.

Assembly bonding
Gluing is often a simpler option to drilling holes and inserting screws. Our PUR and STP-based assembly adhesives are ideal for the purpose, e.g. for:
-
gluing handles to cupboard doors
-
gluing drawer handles
-
attaching skirting boards
-
mounting decor elements
Our assembly adhesives allow you to connect almost all types of materials. Do you need help with a specific application? Our experts have many years of experience and can help you find the right adhesive and the related process.
